Depending on the stage your child has reached in their academic career, there are several ways I can help. Common to all however, is giving your child the confidence, knowledge and mindset to succeed.
Basic Literacy & Numeracy
A solid foundation in Literacy & Numeracy is the cornerstone of your child's education. If your child is struggling in either or both of these areas, I can help to improve both ability and confidence, which will have a beneficial effect across all subjects. Whilst it is important to provide this help as early as possible, it can never be too late to benefit from a boost in these key areas.
SATs and 11+ Preparation
There is no pass mark for Year 6 SATs. Their purpose is to help measure how much progress your child has made by this stage, and this information is often used to help secondary schools place your child in the correct set or class.
I believe that too much specific preparation for either SATs or the 11+ test papers is not necessarily a good thing. It is possible that a child could find themselves in a set or even a school that is not right for them, and where they may struggle in the future. It is important however, for a child to approach these tests with the confidence and mindset that will help them to achieve the result that is best for them.
The work I do to prepare children for these tests, focuses primarily on developing basic skills and building confidence, rather than coaching to pass test papers.
Key Stage 3
As your child progresses through the early years of secondary school, in addition to providing support with Maths, English and/or Science, my role can also include mentoring. The mentoring aspect can help identify obstacles to learning and guide a child towards overcoming them; building confidence & providing a solid foundation in readiness for beginning their exam subjects. Assistance can also be given on homework and other assignments that a child may need help or advice with, regardless of subject.
Key Stage 4/GCSEs
At this stage in a young person's academic career, I focus primarily on Maths. I initially support the work being done in school as well as ongoing revision of topics that have already been covered. As exams draw closer, more time is spent on guided exam practice; this helps to build confidence as well as improve exam technique by giving a greater understanding of how to maximise marks.
I am also able to provide assistance with coursework for other subjects, whether helping generate initial ideas, organising writing or proofreading drafts.
